SIM का फुल फॉर्म होता है Subscriber Identification Module (ग्राहक पहचान मॉड्यूल) यानी एक ऐसा चिप जिसकी मदद से टेलीकॉम कम्युनिकेशन कंपनी अपने ग्राहक की पहचान करती है। दुनिया का सबसे पहले सिम कार्ड को 1991 में Giesocke and Devrient नाम की कंपनी ने बनाया था। जिस तरह मेमोरी कार्ड में डाटा स्टोर करने की क्षमता होती है उसी तरह सिम कार्ड में भी डाटा स्टोर होता है। एक सिम कार्ड में अधिकतम 64kb डाटा स्टोर किया जा सकता हैै इसी में आपकी सारी जानकारी स्टोर होती है।
